You are the emergency physician in charge of a regional hospital emergency department at 1600 on a weekday. Rural emergency services notify you that 10 people are involved in a major road traffic crash, with further details to follow.

Current ED status: two resus cubicles are occupied by a 19-year-old woman with polypharmacy overdose and altered conscious state, and a 65-year-old man with AMI who completed thrombolysis 1 hour ago without complications and is awaiting tertiary transfer. In the 10 general cubicles, eight patients are waiting to be seen and two cubicles are vacant.
