SAQ 1991 – Paediatric choking with peri-arrest airway obstruction

A prehospital bat call reports a 4-year-old boy en route after choking on a piece of sausage 30 minutes earlier.

He was initially coughing effectively but lost consciousness during transport. No foreign body has been seen or removed, and ETA is 5 minutes.

On arrival he is peri-arrest: SpO2 in the 40s, tachycardic, pale, unresponsive, pupils unreactive, tachypnoeic with poor effort, audible stridor and right-sided crackles and wheeze greater than the left.
