a. Discharge criteria

• Must be a simple febrile seizure.
• Febrile.
• Duration less than 10 minutes.
• Tonic-clonic seizure, not focal.
• Focus identified.
• Normal conscious state after the post-ictal period.
• Adequate social environment and parental understanding.

b. Parent advice

• Stay calm and do not panic.
• Time how long the convulsion lasts.
• Place the child on a soft surface, lying on their side or back.
• Do not put anything in the child's mouth, including fingers.
• Try to watch exactly what happens so it can be described to the doctor later.
• Do not put the child in the bath during a convulsion.
• Do not restrain the child.
• Call an ambulance if the convulsion lasts more than five minutes.
• Call an ambulance if the child does not wake up when the convulsion stops.
• Call an ambulance if the child looks very sick when the convulsion stops.
