A 12-year-old boy is brought to the ED by his parents with profuse bleeding from his mouth. He had a tonsillectomy at your hospital 7 days earlier. On arrival he is GCS 15, pulse 160/min, BP 75/40 mmHg, RR 30/min, oxygen saturation 99% on room air, and he looks pale and sweaty. Your initial assessment is that immediate intubation is not required.
After a short period he vomits a large amount of congealed blood and appears to aspirate a significant portion. You decide to intubate him to protect his airway and facilitate ongoing management.
