SAQ 681 – Administration – capacity and medical treatment decision-maker hierarchy

Marked out of 12.00

A 50-year-old male pedestrian is struck by a car at low speed and brought to your ED. A cervical collar is in situ. He had no loss of consciousness, but has headache and a large temporal laceration. He complains loudly of neck pain. While an IV cannula is being placed, he becomes agitated, aggressive, and decides to leave.

You decide he lacks capacity to leave against medical advice. He remains aggressively non-compliant and is chemically sedated. Multiple relatives arrive and there is confusion about who should be considered the medical treatment decision maker.
